Health and fitness were a major themes of the Extended School Year Program at Y.A.L.E. School’s Northfield campus this summer. The students explored the concept of “wellness” in mathematics, science, reading and writing classes as well as many fun activities over the course of the six week summer program.
In August, students and staff visited the Tilton Athletic Club where they participated in a cardio kick boxing class with a certified trainer. This 45 minute, action packed activity was a physical challenge to all involved. The students were taught self-defense movements and some were even chosen to lead the class!
Ruthie O’Brien, the Group Exercise Director at the Tilton Athletic Club conducted the class. Ms. O’Brien is a highly motivating individual who donated her time after she learned that the students were studying exercise and wellness as part of their summer curriculum.
“The Y.A.L.E. students were well behaved and really got into it!,” commented Ms. O’Brien.
At the end of the afternoon after boarding the bus, the students were overheard saying that they hope to come back again soon to participate in this challenging class.
Y.A.L.E. School Northfield thanks Ms. O’Brien and the entire staff of the Tilton Athletic Club for taking the time to host our community-based instruction trip designed to promote health and fitness awareness in our students.
