Y.A.L.E. School’s Glenn Martins presents at inaugural ParentCamp South Jersey

ParentCamp South JerseyOn November 15th 2014, Glenn Martins, school psychologist and Y.A.L.E. School Assistant Director from Y.A.L.E.’s Cedar Creek campus, was one of the invited speakers at the inaugural ParentCamp South Jersey which took place at the William Davies Middle School in Mays Landing New Jersey. This “un-conference” was attended by over one hundred participants, including parents and educators who were interested in learning more about a wide array of topics pertaining to education. His presentation was entitled “A Practical Guide to Improving Behaviors in the Home.”

During the workshop he stressed the following tips for parents:

  • Parents must make the commitment to use a system reliably over time to achieve desired results
  • Choose one or two behaviors that are a priority and focus on them rather than choosing multiple behaviors which could overwhelm the child
  • Home goals could mirror that of the school enabling the parent to become a “partner” in their child’s education
  • Parents must set aside the time to discuss/provide feedback to the child on a daily basis
  • Parents are encouraged to choose behavior goals and rewards together with their child
  • Charting and graphing progress serves as a visual reinforcement for the child
  • The ultimate goal is to achieve generalization and move from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation

At the end of the session time was allotted for parental questions and answers. For more information about the un-conference, parents are encouraged to visit the ParentCamp website at parentcampsouthjersey.org or follow the #ParentCamp tag on Twitter.
